Description
Ao Run is recognized as the mythical ruler of the Western Sea and is one of the
four great dragon kings of the seas in Chinese tradition. He governs the western
waters, lakes, and rivers associated with them, and acts as guardian of aquatic
and meteorological phenomena related to the west. He is often associated with
the concepts of cold, westerly winds, transition, and the end of cycles, as the
west is the direction of twilight. He is sometimes depicted with “icy” scales,
evoking cold water or ice, and is sometimes associated with Qinghai Lake (or
more specifically, West Lake in some versions).
His underwater or subglacial palace is a majestic place where he commands the
sea creatures, currents, and climatic hazards of his territory. His duties are
to control rain, floods, storms, and water flows in his territory. He can be
invoked to calm the waters or bring rain, but he is also feared when he is not
honored or when his domains are neglected.
