Description
Ao Shun, also known as Ao Ming in some traditions, is the northern dragon king
in Chinese mythology. He is one of the Four Dragon Kings, each ruling over a sea
corresponding to one of the cardinal points, under the authority of the Jade
Emperor. Lord of the North Sea, he reigns over cold waters, icy winds, and
winter storms. He symbolizes the north, the winter season, and the element of
water, often represented by the color black or dark hues, which sometimes earns
him the nickname “Black Dragon.”
According to mythology, he lives in a splendid underwater palace made of ice and
dark pearls, surrounded by sea creatures and dragon servants. Like his brothers,
he controls the tides, rain, and storms, and can be summoned to bring rain in
times of drought or calm the waves in times of storm. Although feared, his power
also brings life: he embodies the balance between destruction and renewal, cold
and fertility.
